Ugly Truth 54: Personal Development is Work

Good Morning Readers,

You know, it’s not every day you catch the rain the moment it falls. I shouldn’t be awake and 5am, but sometimes I’m so glad I am. I love those tiny moments of peace and clarity just before the world begins to stir. Nature has so much to offer, if only we would pay attention. So, it got me thinking: What can I do today to strengthen my personal development?

There has been something of what feels like a torrential madness swirling through me lately. It is difficult to articulate, but I always try to maintain my transparency for my readers. The best piece of advice I ever read was to encourage others when you are struggling. While this platform does serve as a vehicle for my own meandering, I also seek to produce meaningful content for you, my readers. As a mental health writer, it is imperative to give something tangible to your audience, something useful.

Unable to sleep, I went down a spiritual rabbit hole this morning. I found some interesting insight I’d love to share with you because I believe whole heartedly a shift in perspective, however temporary, is useful for us all.

The above lecture by MindValley Talks offers a Crash Course on Spirituality (4 Levels of Consciousness and the Big Questions by Alan Watts.) It touches on the social constructs we build, and how they confine us to a certain way of thinking. Imagine, for a moment, if you could rebuild your inner world to serve you rather than torment you? The good news is you can, and like all good things – it requires practice.

At the halfway point in this lecture, the speaker offers up a meaningful exercise by Alan Watts, a British writer and speaker responsible for the interpretation and popularization of Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism for a Western audience (Wiki.) If you have an hour of your day to do some soul work, I’d love to see your responses in the comments below.

      My sleep habits are a combination of a life long battle with insomnia, mental illness, chronic pain, and the fact that my girlfriend wakes up at 5am for work everyday.

      I have what I often refer to as “reverse insomnia.” Typically, I can fall asleep, but I don’t stay asleep. If I go to bed too early, or sleep too much the night before, I will wake up at 5am. Unisom takes the edge off and helps me fall back asleep, but then I run the risk of having nightmares every single time I re-enter REM sleep from a waking state. I am considering getting back on my medication because sleep is SO IMPORTANT.

        Oh i see that sounds quite intense and a lot to go through.

        I only asked cos I’m interested in the science behind sleep as i have my own on and off struggles. I think it’s stress related.

        Interesting regarding the reverse insomnia and thanks for the education seems like you go through a lot with your sleep, sounds exhausting. Sleep is very very important and i really hope you get yours on track as best as you can.

        Thank you! The reason I write is to help others after all. I’m very interested in sleep science also. It is truly fascinating! Stress definitely plays a role. I’ve just recovered from a Bipolar episode, so that can and does certainly play a role. Fortunately, I am starting to feel better. Thank you for the well wishes!   1. this is a very heartfelt and personal article. The hard truth is that developing oneself through personal development takes daily effort. The good news is that the information and tools are available for reminder on the days that are the hardest.

      I believe one of the best markers for recovery is taking self responsibility for your wellness and halting the victimization cycle. Like most things in life, there will be ups and downs and we must find our own way in our own terms.
